Why hello there!

Look at you stumbling across my medium profile. Thanks for popping by! My name is Victoria, I’m a freelance writer from Canada. Yes, of course, I have a website, but if you don’t want to click that, then you can read my introduction here.

I’ve been writing since I could hold a pen in my hands. Poetry has always been one of my favourite genres, but I also love illustrating comics and children’s writing. During my teenage years, I dabbled in slam poetry and performed at festivals across in Canada on various slam teams.

Now “U” will never know what might have been

The following letters have been transcribed from Noah Webster’s collection of secret letters found in a drawer with a bottle of whiskey and a handkerchief embroidered with the letter U. It reveals that he was once in a secret relationship with a mysterious woman named Uriel, and who was, unsurprisingly, erased from history.

Saturday, December 1st, 1781

Dearest Noah,

I arose this morning to empty sheets. Am I just another fling to you? You can’t run from me. I am all too ubiquitous. You can’t hide from me in your little pile of dictionaries and lexicons.

This is not how…

FREELANCE TIPS & PSYCHOLOGY

Advice from a fellow Freelance Writer

It’s hard to know how much you’re worth. We’ve all been there. Working for yourself means also working on your own self-doubt, and that can take time to develop.

For my first steady writing client, I charged only $18 US an hour. He’s one of my best clients, so I’m still working at that rate. However, with new clients, I’ve started charging more because I know what I’m worth and now I have the testimonials to prove it.

There is always a time and place to offer discounted rates, but once you’re established you need to raise them. …

Podcast Tips

Advice from Someone who used to Hate Podcasts

Like many people, when I first started listening to podcasts, it was far from enjoyable. Now, I will admit I actually started listening to talk radio, which is a bit different from podcasts but still similar enough that they coloured my perception of podcasts as well. You want me to listen to people talking in a room? How boring. No thank you.

The first radio show I listened to was a sports network with an ex-partner of mine. During hockey season I suffered immensely. We constantly fought over who was in charge of the radio while driving places.

Eventually, I…

PERSONAL ESSAY

How I reached my most successful month yet

This time last year, I was on vacation in Cuba with my little sister for her 21st birthday. It was a needed break and I was working as a customer service representative in an office that sold faucets and door hardware. I thought I was happy, and I was, but I had no idea how much my life would change just a year later.

First, there was a pandemic, which uprooted a lot of our lives. I also switched jobs and became a 911 operator, but wound up unemployed shortly after that. …

BUSINESS

How Cheap Writing Hurts Your Company’s Brand

If you’re looking to hire a freelance writer for your business, there are a few things you should be aware of. While it might be tempting to save some cash and hire the cheapest person you can find, there are plenty of reasons you shouldn’t.

I’m saying this because I was a cheap freelance writer, and I did some of these things, but I was learning and that was why I was so cheap. Even now, I’m more affordable than other writers out there as I consider myself to still be developing my skills.

Here’s why you should spend a…

MUSIC

Yes, I am kind of obsessed right now.

Lady Lamb

If you aren’t listening to her, well you’re missing out. She’s an American singer and songwriter with stunning vocals and beautiful lyrics. Currently, I can’t stop listening to her song Deep Love. Although, I enjoy everything she does so you hopefully will too. Crater Lake is another one I highly recommend.

Here, have a little bit of love, it’s on the house:

Samia

From New York City, Samia is the latest addition to my playlists. Her lyrics and vocals are far superior to anything I could possibly sing. My favourite song by her is Someone Tell the Boys…

WRITING

Your stats will plummet immensely.

For the record, I’m not disappointed at all, this is completely expected. When you stop making new content, you’re not putting yourself out there and the internet doesn’t care nearly as much about old content.

My goal the last couple of months was to write 2 articles a week on Medium and I was keeping it up until this month. As of now, I’ve only published 4 articles and February is nearly over. There are a couple of articles in my drafts that are almost ready, but not where I want them to be.

I’ll admit it—I fell off the…

WRITING

TLDR: I drink a lot of beer.

We’ve all been there. Faced with the task of writing for ourselves or for a client, but we just can’t seem to get going. Maybe for you getting started is the hard part, or maybe it’s just knowing when to stop editing and hit publish. We all have different weaknesses. And when I just can’t get in the mood to write, I crack a beer.

That’s the honest truth.

There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ trick into being productive. Everyone is different. As a freelance writer, I’m not always in the mood to write. I have to make myself write. …
